What is a Home Care Package?
For many older Australians, a Home Care Package opens the door to being able to age in the comfort of your own home.
Home Care Packages are consumer-directed, which means you can choose the services and providers that work both with you and for you.
Home Care Package subsidies enable you to avoid moving to a nursing home so you can continue to live in your own home and do want you want to do, when you what to do it, retaining your independence.
Eligibility is based on your care needs as determined through an aged care assessment.
Generally, to be eligible you must:
- Require assistance with some everyday tasks
- Be 65 years or older (50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people).
More information is available on the Am I Eligible page.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for an aged care assessment online.
A trained assessor will then contact you to carry out an assessment. They will talk to you about your situation and work with you to identify what services and home care package level, if eligible, you fall under.
If you require assistance, you can have a family member or friend present.

These funds can be used towards most services you require to stay in your home. If you choose to, you may pay out of pocket above the package subsidy for certain other services or to have more of them.
If you are eligible for a package, contact us and we can discuss your options. All Home Care Packages must be administered by an approved package provider who manage the package funds on your behalf. To do this they charge a package and/or care management fee which is a percentage of your overall package funds. We may be able to refer you to package providers that charge as little as 8% where many can charge up to 35%. The lower the fee charged, the more funds you have to spend on your at home care hours.

What is Private Home Care?
You may not qualify for in home care subsidies because of your income or health needs, but you still want additional help at home. Perhaps you’re eligible for a subsidy, but there’s a long waiting period for the subsidy or package you have been approved for.
In these scenarios, you might choose to purchase private home care instead of, or in conjunction with, government-funded care. You may pay for the initial weeks of care before moving to a subsidy shortly later or add to your current care with some out of pocket funded care on top of your subsidised care.
Private in-home care is home support that you pay for privately, using your own funds. You can choose any private home care provider you like, whether it be a government-approved provider, a private charity, or an individual provider. You can choose exactly what services you want, with no need for approval and no waiting period.
